Nutritional Services
The SBSD Nutritional Services department operates the Offer versus Serve meal pattern of the USDA’s National School Breakfast and Lunch programs. The state of Vermont offers Universal School Meals free of charge to any student (pre-K through 12th grade) that takes the required components to meet the USDA guidelines for a Free reimbursable meal.
The USDA only reimburses us for a complete reimbursable meal based on their meal pattern guidelines. Individual items such as a piece of fruit for a snack, or just milk or juice for breakfast do not meet the reimbursable meal guidelines and those items must be paid for.
Offer versus Serve (OVS) allows students to decline foods they do not want to eat. All five components must be offered in the minimum required quantities but, under OVS, students have the option to select a minimum of three components from the five offered at lunch or three food items from the four offered at breakfast. To make a FREE reimbursable meal, at least one of the component/items the student takes must be at least a ½ cup of fruits or vegetables.
Offer vs Serve at Lunch
At lunch, schools must offer students all five required food components in at least the minimum required amounts as outlined in the NSLP meal pattern guidelines. The components offered at lunch are: meats/meat alternates; grains; fruit; vegetables; and fluid milk. Under OVS, to make a reimbursable meal, a student must take at least three components in the required serving sizes. One of those three components must be at least ½ cup from either the fruit or vegetable component.
Offer vs Serve at Breakfast
At breakfast, schools must offer students all three required food components in at least the minimum required amounts as outlined in the NSBP meal pattern guidelines. The components offered at breakfast are: grains (with optional meats/meat alternates allowed); juice/fruit/vegetable; and milk. Under OVS, a student must be offered at least four food items and must select at least three food items, one of those items must be ½ cup of fruit or vegetables.

Vermont Summer EBT Program
Summer EBT is a program that helps families get groceries during the summer break when school meals aren't available.
Many families will automatically get Summer EBT benefits if they already get other benefits. But some might need to apply. If your family already gets benefits like 3SquaresVT, you'll be enrolled in the Summer EBT program.
If your family isn't automatically enrolled but might be eligible, you can apply easily online when applications open in August.
If families qualify and already have an EBT card, their Summer EBT benefits will be added to it. If they don't have a card but qualify, they'll receive a new card.
Families automatically enrolled will be notified by a letter in the mail in July.
Families that qualify will receive $120 per eligible child for healthy summer foods.
