Supporting Transgender and Nonbinary Students

At SBSD, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students! We embrace the unique experiences and perspectives that each individual brings to our community. As part of this commitment, we have established a comprehensive policy to ensure that transgender and nonbinary students feel supported and valued.

Key Highlights of Our Policy:

Inclusive Environment: We strive to create an equitable and positive space for all students, regardless of their gender identity, sexual orientation, or gender expression.

Legal Protection: Our policy aligns with Title IX and state law, protecting transgender and nonbinary students from sex discrimination.

Privacy Rights: Every student has the right to privacy. Discussions on gender diversity are open, and students decide when, with whom, and how much to share about their private information.

Name and Pronoun Use: Students can request the use of their preferred name and pronouns without the need for legal changes. We respect individual choices and work to update records accordingly.

Confidentiality: While disclosure of a student's gender identity may be necessary for safety and educational purposes, we prioritize maintaining confidentiality. We involve students and parents/guardians in developing plans that ensure a safe and affirming environment.

Facilities Access: Students are permitted to use facilities aligning with their gender identity. Alternative arrangements are available for those seeking increased privacy.

Sports and Activities: Students participate in sports and activities in accordance with their asserted gender identity, with accommodations considered on a case-by-case basis.

Monitoring and Reporting: We actively monitor and address disparities in group outcomes, ensuring a comprehensive report on academic achievement, engagement, and incidents of harassment or bullying.

Curriculum Inclusion: Our curriculum supports LGBTQIA+ inclusion, promoting anti-bias education and prohibiting content that excludes the experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Professional Development: Staff members receive training to understand and implement the policy, fostering a gender-inclusive environment and addressing bullying, harassment, and discrimination.
